I have not totally got to the bottom of this because there is more than one of us responsible for computer administration here. The error is caused by the operating system not recognising IE as the default browser. I have to reset it every day within IE. Notes preferences has an option to use the operating system default browser without being specific. We use profiles here to manage our XP Pro clients and I have a suspicion the problem is to do with these, which I am following up. The machine having the problem is a laptop so is booted up regularly on and off the network.
